Canoga Park is one of the older parts of the west Valley and it has the layered housing stock to prove it. There are genuine pre-war cottages and small farmhouses left from when this was agricultural land, substantial wartime and post-war tract from the aerospace expansion, and later infill from the sixties and seventies filling the gaps between them. On a single street you can find a 1930s brick chimney next door to a 1970s prefabricated metal unit. That mix means we cannot assume anything before arriving, and it is one of the few areas where we genuinely do not know what the job is until we see it. The oldest cottages have small, soft-mortared chimneys that need conservative handling. The post-war tract behaves exactly like Reseda's — predictable, accessible, aging on schedule. The seventies infill brings prefabs with chase covers and refractory panels. Three different trades' worth of knowledge on one block. The aerospace-era tract has one quirk worth mentioning: a good deal of it was built quickly to meet housing demand, and the chimney work in particular was sometimes the least careful part of the build. Thin crowns with no overhang, flues that are marginally undersized for the firebox they serve, and mortar joints that were tooled but not properly filled are all things we see more of here than the age alone would suggest. Canoga Park also sits in the part of the Valley that catches wind coming through the Santa Susana pass, and it shares the west Valley's temperature extremes. Uncapped flues fill fast, caps take physical punishment, and crowns crack earlier than they would further east. Fitting a properly anchored cap is close to universal advice out here and it is the cheapest thing on the list. Canoga Park also has more detached garages and workshop outbuildings than most of the Valley, a hangover from when these were working properties on larger plots. Some have their own flues serving old shop heaters or stoves, long disused and almost never inspected. If there is a second chimney on your property that nobody has thought about in twenty years, mention it when we come out.
