Studio City work divides along the same line the geography does. Down on the flats near Ventura the houses are compact traditionals and post-war bungalows with conventional chimneys. Climb into the canyons — Laurel, Fryman, Wrightwood — and you are into hillside construction, and hillside construction changes the job entirely. The defining feature up there is access. Streets are narrow and often have no parking within reach of the house. Driveways are steep and short. A good number of properties are built down the slope from the road, which means the roof you need to reach is below you rather than above, and the chimney termination can be three storeys off the downhill grade even though the front door is at street level. We plan those visits differently and we would rather know in advance than discover it on arrival. The other Studio City characteristic is mid-century architecture, and a lot of it. Post-and-beam houses from the fifties and sixties often came with dramatic open hearths — freestanding cones, raised fireboxes, wide low openings — and those are wonderful to look at and frequently poor at drawing. A fireplace with an opening far too large for the flue serving it will smoke no matter how clean the chimney is, and no amount of sweeping fixes a proportion problem. Where that is what we find, we say so and talk about smoke guards, restrictors or an insert, rather than selling a sweep that will not help. Canyon vegetation matters too. Mature oaks and eucalyptus overhang a great many of these roofs, which means leaf litter in the flue, branches resting on the crown, and a real case for a spark arrestor on any wood-burning stack in a canyon this dense. One more thing worth saying about the flats: the streets between Ventura and the river sit low, and several of them hold groundwater far longer after a wet winter than the surrounding area does. Chimneys on those blocks show more efflorescence — the white mineral bloom that appears when water moves through masonry and evaporates out of the face — than you would expect for their age. It is a symptom rather than a disease, but it tells us water is getting in somewhere and it is worth tracing to its source rather than washing off.
Flats-versus-canyon split. Hillside homes often sit below street level with difficult access and tall downhill terminations. Mid-century open hearths frequently have firebox-to-flue proportion problems that sweeping cannot fix. Heavy tree cover argues for spark arrestors.

In their words
Thorough is the word. They ran a camera down the liner and showed me the cracked section on a tablet before quoting anything at all. No pressure either way. We had it relined and the draft is night and day.

Asked and answered
Usually the firebox opening is too large for the flue area serving it, which is common in mid-century designs around here. That is a proportion problem, not a cleanliness one, and it is fixed with a restrictor, a smoke guard or an insert rather than another brushing.
Almost always, but tell us when you book. Downhill hillside properties need different access planning and we would rather bring the right kit first time.
We would strongly recommend one on any wood-burning flue with trees over the roof, which is most of Laurel and Fryman. It also keeps the leaf litter out.
