West Hollywood is the densest area we cover, and density changes the nature of chimney work completely. A great deal of the housing is 1920s and 1930s multi-family — Spanish courtyard buildings, small apartment blocks, duplexes — where a single chimney stack may have served four, six or eight separate fireplaces on different floors and in different units. Those shared stacks are the defining challenge. Ownership is often split between an HOA and individual owners, nobody is quite sure which flue serves which unit, and the drawings, if they exist at all, are ninety years old and were not necessarily followed. Establishing which passage goes where is genuinely part of the job, and we do it with a camera and smoke testing rather than guesswork. Getting it wrong means sweeping one neighbour's flue and billing another. The second issue is abandonment. Over ninety years a lot of these fireplaces have been decommissioned — bricked up, plastered over, or converted to gas at various points — while the flue above continues up through the building. An abandoned flue that is still open at the top takes water the whole way down, and because it runs through occupied units the damage turns up as damp in somebody's wall long before anyone connects it to a fireplace nobody has used since the seventies. Practically, this is also the hardest place to park a van and get equipment to a roof. Buildings sit shoulder to shoulder, roof access is frequently through a common area that needs arranging in advance, and work in a multi-unit building usually needs notice to residents. None of that is a problem, but it does mean a West Hollywood job takes more organising than a single-family house, and we would rather sort that out when you book than on the morning. A good number of West Hollywood fireplaces are now decorative rather than functional, which is a reasonable outcome for a small unit in a dense building. Where that is the case we would still rather see the flue properly capped and the firebox sealed correctly than left half-open. A decommissioned fireplace done properly is maintenance-free; done casually it is a route for water and wildlife into a shared structure.
Dense 1920s-30s multi-family stock where one stack often served many units, so identifying which flue serves which unit is part of the job. Long history of decommissioned fireboxes left with open flues above, causing damp in occupied units. Roof access usually needs arranging through a common area.

That is often genuinely unclear, and sorting it out is part of the work. We identify which passage serves which unit with a camera and smoke testing rather than guessing from the drawings.
Quite possibly. Decommissioned fireboxes frequently left an open flue running up through the building, and that takes water the whole way down. It shows up as damp in a unit with no fireplace at all.
Routinely. It just needs a little more notice — roof access is usually through a common area and residents generally want telling. Sort it out at booking and the day itself is straightforward.
