Lint is the reason dryers start fires

Lint is an excellent fuel and a dryer duct is a warm tube full of it. Clothes dryers are behind thousands of home fires a year in the United States and failure to clean them is the leading cause. The everyday version of the problem is less dramatic and much more common: a restricted duct makes the machine run two or three cycles to do one load's work, which shortens its life and shows up on the bill. Valley houses make it worse than average, because so many are single-storey with the laundry set in the middle of the plan and a long duct run — sometimes twenty feet with three or four elbows — before it reaches an exterior wall.

What we stand behind

If something we swept or repaired is not right, we come back and put it right at no charge. That has not changed in ten years and it is not going to.

What you get

Why This Job Is Worth Doing Properly

The whole run, not the first metre

Rotary brushing from the machine's connection to the exterior hood, including the elbows where lint actually packs.

Airflow measured

We check the flow before and after, so the improvement is a number rather than a claim.

Hood and flap checked

A stuck or missing exterior flap lets birds in and stops the duct venting. It gets fixed or replaced.

Shorter drying cycles

The most immediate thing people notice. One cycle instead of two is the usual result on a badly restricted run.

Contained, not blown around

Lint is captured at the machine end. It does not end up over the laundry room.

Done on the same visit

If we are already there for the chimney, this adds very little time.

Worth a look

Signs the duct is blocked

  • Clothes still damp after a full cycle, or needing two cycles
  • The dryer or the laundry room getting noticeably hot while running
  • A burning or scorched smell during a cycle
  • Lint visible around the exterior hood, or the flap not opening
  • More than a year since the duct was last cleared
  • A long duct run, or one that goes up through the roof

Step by step

How We Work Through It

Pull the machine out

Carefully, and with the gas or power disconnected where that applies.

Inspect the connection

The flexible section behind the dryer is where crushing and kinking usually hide.

Brush the full run

Rotary rods driven the whole length, worked from both ends where access allows.

Clear the exterior hood

Flap freed or replaced, birdguard checked.

Measure the airflow

Before and after, so you can see what changed.

Reconnect and test

The machine goes back, runs a cycle, and vents properly before we leave.

Questions

Dryer Vent Cleaning FAQs

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?

Once a year for a typical household. More often if you have a long run, a large family, or you dry pet bedding and heavy fabrics regularly.

My duct goes up through the roof. Is that a problem?

It is harder to clean and it collects more, because lint has to travel against gravity. It is also the configuration we see fail most. Perfectly workable, but it wants doing on schedule.

Can I not just do it with a shop vac?

You will get the first couple of feet. The lint that matters is packed into the elbows partway along, and a vacuum will not reach or dislodge it.

Do you clean the machine as well as the duct?

We clear the lint trap housing and the connection at the back. Internal appliance repair is a different trade and we will say so rather than guessing at it.
