Tell us what the chimney is doing. We answer fast, day or night.
The shop is on Emelita Street, so Sherman Oaks is the one service area we can reach in a few minutes rather than half an hour. That matters more than it sounds: most of our genuinely urgent calls — smoke pushing back into a living room, a chimney fire, water coming through a ceiling during a storm — come from within a couple of miles of here, and they get answered fastest. The housing splits neatly in two, and the two halves fail differently. North of Ventura Boulevard is mostly post-war tract: single-storey ranch houses built through the late forties and fifties on flat, regular lots, with modest masonry chimneys serving one open firebox. Those are straightforward to work on. What we find in them is age rather than abuse — original clay liners now seventy years old, crowns that were poured thin and have finally cracked through, and throat dampers rusted part-open by decades of summer condensation. South of Ventura the ground rises into the hills and everything gets more complicated. Those homes are larger, often two-storey, frequently remodelled, and a good number have two or three flues sharing one stack. Split-level and hillside construction means the chimney can run a long way inside the building before it ever reaches daylight, and roof pitches are steep enough that access genuinely needs planning rather than a ladder against the gutter. We see more gas conversions up there too — original wood fireboxes fitted with log sets during a remodel, sometimes without the venting being reassessed at the time. The other local factor is wind. Sherman Oaks sits where the Santa Ana pushes through with real force, and an uncapped flue collects an extraordinary amount of grit, leaves and nesting material over a season. Fitting a cap is the cheapest useful thing most homeowners here can do, and it is the single recommendation we make most often.
Post-war tract north of Ventura, hillside and remodelled stock to the south. Heavy Santa Ana exposure means uncapped flues fill quickly. Multi-flue stacks are common in the hills, and steep pitches make roof access a planned job.

In their words
Called at nine on a Sunday night because the living room filled with smoke. Someone was here before eleven, found a bird's nest wedged in the flue, and cleared it out. I did not expect anyone to pick up, let alone turn up.

Faster than anywhere else we cover — the shop is on Emelita Street. Same-day is normal and for a genuine emergency we are usually there within the hour.
It is a planning question rather than an obstacle. Steep pitches and long internal chimney runs are routine up there; we just want to know the layout when you book so the right equipment comes on the first visit.
Almost always a missing or damaged cap combined with the wind that funnels through this stretch of the Valley. A cap and a spark arrestor solve it permanently and cost very little.
