Water is what takes a chimney apart
Almost every chimney repair we are called to started as water. The crown cracks, rain gets into the masonry, and then the freeze and thaw cycle — which we do get up in the foothills — prises the joints apart from the inside. Add the Santa Ana winds driving grit and rain horizontally into a stack that has no cap, and plenty of Valley homes still running their original 1950s clay liners, and you get chimneys that look perfectly fine from the driveway and are structurally tired at the top. Caught in the first season, a crown reseal and some repointing is a modest job. Left for five years, the same chimney needs its top third rebuilt.

Matched masonry
Mortar is mixed to suit the age of the chimney. A hard modern mix on soft old brick does more damage than the crack it replaced.
Breathable waterproofing
The sealer we use lets vapour out while keeping rain off. The film-forming kind traps moisture in the brick and spalls it faster.
Relining where it is warranted
Stainless liner systems sized to the appliance, not upsold by default. A sound clay liner gets left alone.
Structural honesty
If a lean is cosmetic we say so. If it is not, you get photographs showing why.

Breathable repellent, then a final check that the whole assembly sheds water the way it should.

Is a cracked crown urgent?
It is the single most common way water gets into a chimney, so yes, sooner is much cheaper than later. A hairline crack can be sealed. Once the crown is spalling in chunks it needs recasting.
Can you match hundred-year-old brick?
Usually, and we would rather repoint and salvage than replace. Where a face brick has to be swapped we source the nearest match we can and put it where it shows least.
Do I need a full reline?
Only if the liner has actually failed. We film it first and show you. A single cracked tile is sometimes repairable; a flue with gaps along its length is not.
How long does a crown rebuild take?
Most are a day on site plus cure time before we waterproof. Bigger stacks or awkward roof access can run to two.
