Los Angeles proper covers so much ground and so many building eras that the only honest thing to say is that the job depends entirely on the address. Within our thirty-mile radius we work across Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Echo Park, Hollywood, Atwater Village, Eagle Rock and Highland Park, and those neighbourhoods have almost nothing in common structurally beyond being older than most of the Valley. What they do share is age. Much of this housing predates the Second World War, a good deal of it predates 1930, and that puts the chimneys in the category where unlined flues, soft lime mortar and a century of seismic history are all live considerations. Eagle Rock and Highland Park in particular have dense concentrations of Craftsman and California bungalow stock where the original fireplace is still the centrepiece of the room and deserves conserving rather than replacing. The hillside neighbourhoods — Los Feliz above Los Feliz Boulevard, the Silver Lake hills, Beachwood Canyon — bring the access problems familiar from Studio City and Glendale, with the added complication of some of the narrowest streets in the county. Several of these areas also sit in fire hazard severity zones against Griffith Park and the Santa Monica Mountains, which makes spark arrestor condition a real priority rather than a formality. Because the spread is so wide, we ask more questions when a Los Angeles job is booked than we do elsewhere: roughly when the house was built, whether the fireplace is masonry or a manufactured unit, whether it has been converted to gas, and how the roof is reached. Five minutes on the phone is what stops a crew arriving with the wrong ladder for a house on a slope, and it is why we would rather talk to you than take a booking through a form alone.
Enormous spread of eras and neighbourhoods, unified mainly by being older than the Valley — pre-war and pre-1930 stock with unlined flues, soft mortar and a century of seismic history. Hillside neighbourhoods bring narrow-street access problems and fire hazard zones against Griffith Park and the Santa Monicas.

Asked and answered
Yes — anywhere inside roughly thirty miles of Sherman Oaks, which takes in Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Echo Park, Atwater, Eagle Rock and Highland Park.
Because a 1912 bungalow in Eagle Rock and a hillside house in Beachwood Canyon need different equipment. Five minutes on the phone stops a crew turning up with the wrong ladder.
The liner, with a camera. That era frequently built unlined, and a century of use plus seismic history leaves damage that is invisible from both ends.
