Los Angeles proper covers so much ground and so many building eras that the only honest thing to say is that the job depends entirely on the address. Within our thirty-mile radius we work across Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Echo Park, Hollywood, Atwater Village, Eagle Rock and Highland Park, and those neighbourhoods have almost nothing in common structurally beyond being older than most of the Valley. What they do share is age. Much of this housing predates the Second World War, a good deal of it predates 1930, and that puts the chimneys in the category where unlined flues, soft lime mortar and a century of seismic history are all live considerations. Eagle Rock and Highland Park in particular have dense concentrations of Craftsman and California bungalow stock where the original fireplace is still the centrepiece of the room and deserves conserving rather than replacing. The hillside neighbourhoods — Los Feliz above Los Feliz Boulevard, the Silver Lake hills, Beachwood Canyon — bring the access problems familiar from Studio City and Glendale, with the added complication of some of the narrowest streets in the county.
