Most fireplace faults are small until they are not
The chimney gets the attention, but most of what actually goes wrong is at eye level. Firebrick cracks and the mortar between it washes out. Dampers seize part-open, which quietly vents your heating up the flue for eight months of the year. Gas log sets drift out of adjustment until they soot up the very logs they are meant to keep clean, and a direct-vent insert with a fouled intake will shut itself down on the coldest night of the year. None of it is dramatic and none of it fixes itself, which is exactly why it tends to get left until the fireplace stops working altogether.

Do gas fireplaces really need annual service?
Yes, and they are the ones most often skipped. There is no soot to prompt you, but burners drift, venting fouls, and safety devices age. The failure mode is quieter than a wood fire's, which is not the same as safer.
Can you convert my wood fireplace to gas?
Often, with a log set or a direct-vent insert. Whether it is worth it depends on the flue and the venting run — we will look before quoting.
The firebox brick is cracked. Is that dangerous?
It depends how deep. Surface crazing is normal; open cracks and washed-out joints let heat reach the masonry behind, which is not. It is a photograph-and-explain job rather than a yes-or-no answer.
Do you fit chimney caps?
Yes, and we would fit one on almost any open flue. It keeps rain off the damper and the smoke shelf, keeps birds out, and on most Valley homes it pays for itself in avoided repairs.
